Trigger point injections can be an effective treatment modality for chronic muscle spasms. Muscles spasms happen when the muscles contract for an extended period, thus decreasing the flow of oxygen reaching them. When a spasm occurs, the muscle struggles to heal itself, resulting in localized pain. If the provider can identify the trigger points for these muscle spasms, a local anesthetic or steroid can be injected directly into the muscle.
The length of the pain relief from trigger point injections will vary from patient to patient. For some, the injection’s effects last for several months before another round of the treatment is required. However, if there are no underlying issues with the joints and muscles, a single treatment may be sufficient. In patients who have pain in multiple areas, trigger point injections may only alleviate some of them, and additional pain relief may be necessary.
